Complete Echeveria Care Guide

Echeveria are low-maintenance rosette succulents—overwatering and poor light are the top killers.

☀️ Light

- Ideal: 4–6+ hours of direct sun daily (south/west window best)

- Outdoor: Full sun; light shade only in extreme heat

- Indoor: Use LED grow lights (12–14hrs/day) if light is weak

- Warning: Leggy/stretched growth = too little light; pale brown patches = sunburn

💧 Water (Golden Rule: Soak-and-Dry)

- Method: Water thoroughly until it drains; only repeat when soil is bone dry all the way down

- Seasons: Spring/Summer ~every 1–2 weeks; Autumn/Winter ~every 3–6 weeks

- Critical: Water at soil—never into the rosette crown (causes fatal rot)

- Signs: Wrinkled soft leaves = thirsty; yellow/mushy leaves = overwatered

🪴 Soil & Pots

- Mix: Use cactus/succulent mix + 50% perlite/pumice/grit for sharp drainage

- DIY: 2 parts succulent mix : 1 part perlite : 1 part coarse sand

- Pots: Always have drainage holes; terracotta works best (dries faster)

- pH: Slightly acidic to neutral (6.0–7.0)

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

- Best: 15–28°C (59–82°F); protect below 5°C (no frost!)

- Humidity: 30–50% (normal home air); avoid steamy bathrooms

- Winter: Keep cool (7–12°C), dry, and bright

🧪 Feeding & Repotting

- Fertiliser: Only spring–early summer; cactus feed (low nitrogen, e.g. 1-2-2) once every 1–2 months max

- Repot: Every 1–2 years in spring; same depth as before

🐛 Common Problems & Fixes

Symptom Cause Action

  1. Stretched/leggy Too little light Move brighter; trim top if needed

  2. Mushy/yellow leaves Overwatering/rot Stop water; repot in dry gritty mix

  3. White cottony fluff Mealybugs Dab with 70% alcohol; check weekly

  4. Wrinkled/shriveled Underwatered Deep soak; check drainage

  5. Brown crispy tips Hard water/fertiliser Use rainwater; flush soil

✂️ Easy Propagation

1. Leaves: Twist off fully, dry 2–3 days, lay on soil—new plants in ~4 weeks

2. Pups: Detach small offsets at base; plant after 1 day callus

3. Cuttings: Behead leggy tops; dry 2–3 days then root

💡 Quick Rule: When in doubt—don’t water yet! Echeveria forgive dryness but rarely wet feet.
