Mammillaria plumosa (Feather Cactus) Care Guide

Clumping, mound-forming cactus covered in soft-looking white feathery spines; blooms sweet-scented ivory/pink flowers in spring. Highly rot-prone—dry is safer than wet!

☀️ Light

- Ideal: Bright light + 4–6 hrs gentle morning sun; light afternoon shade in summer

- Indoor: South/East window; acclimate slowly to direct sun to avoid scorching

- Warning:

- Leggy growth, sparse/less white spines = too little light

- Brown patches on stems = sunburn

- Rotate regularly for even shape

💧 Water (Critical Rule!)

- Method: Soak-and-dry—only water when soil is bone dry all the way through

- Seasons:

- Spring/Summer: ~every 10–18 days (adjust for pot size/heat)

- Autumn: Gradually reduce; stop entirely mid-autumn

- Winter: Keep almost completely dry; only tiny sip if stems wrinkle

- Key: Water only at soil level—never wet the feathery spines (traps moisture & causes rot)

🪴 Soil & Pots

- Mix: Very free-draining cactus compost + 40–50% perlite/pumice/coarse grit

- Pots: Must have drainage holes; terracotta best for fast drying

- Repot: Every 2–3 years in spring; handle gently—spines are fragile

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

- Best: 18–27°C growing season; winter rest 5–10°C (boosts flowering)

- Minimum: Keep above 2°C (only if bone dry); never freeze

- Humidity: Dry air (30–45%)—perfect for UK homes; avoid steamy spots

🧪 Feeding & Maintenance

- Feed: Half-strength low-nitrogen cactus fertiliser once or twice only—late spring & mid-summer

- Skip: Autumn & winter completely

- Note: No pruning needed; handle carefully—soft feathers hide sharp real spines

🐛 Common Problems

Symptom Cause Fix

Mushy stems/rotten base Overwatering/wet soil Stop water; repot in dry gritty mix

Sparse, pale spines Low light Move to brighter spot

No flowers Too warm/wet in winter Keep cool & dry over winter

White fluffy spots Mealybugs Dab with 70% isopropyl alcohol

Shrivelled stems Thirsty or root-bound Deep soak; repot if needed

✂️ Propagation

- Offsets: Easiest—gently detach clumps in spring, let cut dry 2–3 days, plant in dry mix

- Seed: Slow; sow at 19–24°C in spring

💡 Top Tip: This cactus hates wet feet—if in doubt, wait another week to water!
