Crassula falcata variegata (Variegated Propeller Plant) Care Guide

Distinctive sickle/propeller leaves with creamy-white/silver variegation; slower-growing & more light-sensitive than the green form.

☀️ Light (Key for Variegation)

- Ideal: Bright filtered/indirect light + 2–3 hrs gentle morning sun daily; 4–6 hrs total bright light keeps variegation crisp

- Indoor: South/East window; shield harsh midday sun with a sheer curtain

- Warning:

- Leggy growth + fading patterns = too little light (may revert to solid green)

- Brown/bleached patches on pale areas = sunburn

- Variegated parts have less chlorophyll—acclimate slowly to stronger light

💧 Water (Soak-and-Dry, More Careful!)

- Rule: Water thoroughly only when soil is bone dry (top 3–5cm completely dry)

- Seasons: Spring/Summer ~every 10–14 days; Autumn/Winter ~every 4–8 weeks—only enough to stop leaves wrinkling

- Critical: Never pour water into leaf axils; always water at soil level to avoid crown rot

- Signs: Wrinkled soft leaves = thirsty; yellow/mushy lower leaves = overwatering/rot

🪴 Soil & Pots

- Mix: Fast-draining cactus/succulent mix + 50% perlite/pumice/grit; 60% grit : 40% organic works best

- Pots: Must have drainage holes; terracotta ideal for faster drying

- Repot: Every 2 years in spring; same depth as before

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

- Best: 15–26°C; never below 5°C—no frost protection needed indoors, bring outside pots in below 10°C

- Winter: Cool (7–12°C), bright & dry encourages blooms next season

- Humidity: 30–50% (normal home); avoid bathrooms/steamy spots

🧪 Feeding & Maintenance

- Fertiliser: Very mild—half-strength low-nitrogen cactus feed, once every 6–8 weeks only spring–summer; skip in winter

- Pruning: Snip any all-green reverted stems—they outgrow variegated growth

- Flowers: Mature plants produce clusters of bright red star blooms in late summer

🐛 Common Fixes

Issue Cause Action

Losing variegation Too little light Move brighter; trim reverted stems

Mushy stems/leaves Overwatering/poor drainage Stop water; repot in dry gritty mix

White cottony spots Mealybugs Dab with 70% isopropyl alcohol

Stretched/leaning Uneven/low light Rotate weekly; add grow light

✂️ Propagation

- Stem cuttings: Most reliable; cut healthy stem, dry 2–3 days to callus, plant in dry gritty mix

- Leaf cuttings: Possible but slower; variegation may not come true

💡 Top Tip: Variegated succulents use less water—always err on the dry side!
